The members and employees of Twenty Essex are saddened to hear of the recent passing of former member of chambers, Tony Lloyd, Baron Lloyd of Berwick, at the age of 95.
Tony was head of chambers at what was then 3 Essex Court from the mid-1960s until his appointment to the bench in 1978. From the Commercial Court, he was elevated to the Court of Appeal in 1984, and to the House of Lords in 1993, where he served as a law lord until 1998.
Speaking on behalf of his former colleagues at Twenty Essex, current co-heads of chambers Philip Edey KC and Charles Kimmins KC said: “Tony was a superb advocate and an outstanding and important judge, well known for his gracious and upbeat courtroom manner. He is remembered fondly by colleagues and peers for his brilliant mind, charm, humour and kindness.”
A former army officer and member of the Coldstream Guards, Tony was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1955. He took silk in 1967, and served as Attorney-General to the Prince of Wales.
Our thoughts are with Tony’s family and friends at this time.
