Members of 20 Essex Street are delighted to congratulate Andrew Baker QC on his appointment to be a Justice of the High Court. The appointment is with effect from 1 November 2016. The Lord Chief Justice will assign the new Mr Justice Andrew Baker to the Queen’s Bench Division. He will be sworn in by the Lord Chief Justice at 4.45 pm on 1 November 2016.

Andrew was called to the Bar in 1988 and took silk in 2006. He was appointed as a Recorder in 2012, sitting in the Crown Court on the North Eastern Circuit, and was authorised to sit as a Deputy High Court judge in May 2016. During his 28-year career at the Bar, Andrew’s principal areas of practice have been shipping, international sale of goods, commodities, insurance and re-insurance, conflicts of laws, arbitration and international banking and derivatives. Since taking silk, he has also sat regularly as arbitrator.

Between July 2009 and July 2016, Andrew was one of the Series Editors of the Lloyd's Shipping Law Library. He is also one of the co-authors of the 6th and 7th Editions of "Time Charters".

Members wish him every success in this new appointment.
