Chambers Asia Guide 2015

This is an archived article, and some links may not work. Contact us if you have any questions.

Four members of 20 Essex Street have been recognised in the latest Chambers & Partners Asia Pacific Guide (launched on 11 February 2015). The directory identifies the top arbitrators, barristers, solicitors and law firms over 41 jurisdictions in the Asia region.

Singapore: Dispute Resolution: Arbitration: The English Bar

For the second year running, David Lewis QC ("a very impressive new silk who's very good on his feet and as a cross-examiner") and Simon Milnes ("talented beyond his call") are identified as notable practitioners in this section of the guide. The list, of only 6 barristers in total, acknowledges those English barristers who are "recgonised by the local market as being at the forefront" of international arbitration in Singapore.

Asia-Pacific: Arbitration (International): Most in Demand Arbitrators

20 Essex Street's international arbitrators dominate the "Star Individuals" sub-section, with Michael Moser and Michael Pryles both recommended.

Full editorial of 20 Essex Street members can be found below.

Michael Moser of 20 Essex Street is one of the region's most experienced and highly regarded arbitrators, being the first foreigner to be appointed as arbitrator in China. Long associated with the HKIAC and well versed in the rules of the fullest range of institutional and ad hoc arbitration systems, he is also especially familiar with investor-state issues and those arising in the international trade, oil and gas and projects sectors.

Michael Pryles is the current chairman of SIAC and has arbitrated over 400 cases across the Asia-Pacific region, in Europe and in the USA. The recipient of enthusiastic praise from numerous sources, he is singled out by one for his "balanced approach, commitment to excellence, attention to detail and really good procedural rulings."

David Lewis QC of 20 Essex Street took silk in 2014. He frequently receives instructions on shipping and commodities issues as well as handling arbitrations arising from disputes in the energy sector. Those instructing him find him "a pleasure to work with," citing his "unmatched clarity of thought and ability to distil complicated issues." His advocacy receives similar praise, with one source calling him "a very impressive new silk who's very good on his feet and as a cross-examiner.

Simon Milnes of 20 Essex Street specialises in commercial arbitrations, predominantly of matters arising in the shipping, commodities and energy spaces. Several sources consider him talented beyond his call, with one observing: "He punches above his weight; his written work is just terrific and he has a very nice way of putting things in pleadings." Another commentator notes: "He is good on his feet, thinks off-the-cuff very well, speaks confidently without notes and is dogged and determined in pursuit of the case." Milnes is currently resident in Singapore.
