Professor David D Caron

Chambers is deeply saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Professor David D Caron on 20 February 2018.

Professor Caron was an esteemed academic, lawyer and arbitrator having served as C. William Maxeiner Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of California at Berkeley and the Dean and Professor of International Law of The Dickson Poon School of Law at King’s College London. He had a busy practice as an arbitrator, a role in which he was much sought after, and was also sitting as Judge ad hoc in two cases before the International Court of Justice. In addition, he was recently appointed a Member of the Iran – U.S. Claims Tribunal. Professor Caron was an enthusiastic and dedicated member of 20 Essex Street, contributing much professionally and personally.

Professor Caron’s obituary was published in Global Arbitration Review on 21 February 2018. His family welcome stories from friends and colleagues via email to stories@davidcaron.life. These will soon be shared by way of a hub at www.davidcaron.life.

Our thoughts and condolences are with Professor Caron’s wife Susan, his children Peter and Marina, and his friends and colleagues around the world.

The Honourable Society of the Inner Temple will host a Thanksgiving for the Life of Professor David D. Caron in Inner Temple Hall at six o’clock on Friday 23 March 2018. Dame Rosalyn Higgins QC will preside over the memorial and speakers will include Sir Daniel Bethlehem QC (20 Essex Street Chambers), Professor John Phillips (King’s College London), and Professor Tom Ginsburg (UC Berkeley Graduate, University of Chicago).

There will also be music, poetry, and David’s family’s selection of some memories of his life. All David’s friends from the Inn, 20 Essex Street Chambers, the Center for Transnational Legal Studies, King’s College London, and around the world are welcome to join. Please RSVP to events@davidcaron.life.

David’s family are grateful to his colleagues at 20 Essex Street Chambers for their support for refreshments to conclude proceedings and to the Inn for hosting the evening.
