How to apply

Selection Criteria

These criteria are applied when selecting mini-pupils,
pupils and tenants. In looking for people likely in due
course to become successful barristers practising
from these chambers, we look for candidates with the
following qualities:

Intellect
  • Outstanding intellectual ability, typically evidenced by an excellent academic record.
  • A sound knowledge and understanding of legal principles or, where appropriate, a real potential to develop such knowledge and understanding.
  • The ability efficiently to research and assimilate unfamiliar areas of knowledge, including unfamiliar fields of law.
  • The ability to absorb and analyse a set of facts, so as to identify the relevant factual and legal issues. The ability to apply principles intelligently, incisively and with good judgement.

Advocacy and communication skills
  • The ability to present and argue a case either on paper or orally in a calm, engaging and persuasive manner.
  • The ability to produce clear, well expressed and structured written work.
  • Articulacy and clarity in oral communication, knowledge and understanding.

Motivation and independence
  • An interest in our fields of work and a commitment to a career at the Commercial Bar, preferably at these Chambers.
  • The qualities needed by the self-employed: self reliance, self-confidence, stamina and organisational skills.

Teamwork and inter-personal skills
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team, taking a leadership role within the team where appropriate.
  • The ability to engage and impress other lawyers and clients.

When to apply
We accept applications once you have completed your penultimate year.

The application
Candidate applies through the Pupillage Gateway.
Applications reviewed and scored against selection criteria and pupillage portal application form.
Rare Contextual Recruitment software also informs the selection process.
Around twenty candidates are shortlisted for interview.

The interview
Shortlisted candidates invited for interview in late March and undertake a written exercise in the week before the interview.
Interview format involves discussing a legal problem provided shortly before the interview begins, followed by questions of a more general nature.
A contribution of up to £100 is available for travel expenses to attend a pupillage interview on the production of expenses receipts.
