Following his retirement earlier this year, Sir Bernard Rix (formerly Lord Justice Rix) has now joined 20 Essex Street as an arbitrator and mediator member.
Prior to becoming a judge, Bernard Rix had practised as a barrister from 3 Essex Court (subsequently 20 Essex Street) and therefore views his return to Chambers as coming back to his original legal home. At the Bar Sir Bernard specialised in international commercial and arbitral disputes both as a barrister and, latterly, as an arbitrator, appearing in the courts of London, Singapore and Hong Kong. As a member of the Court of Appeal, he delivered a wide range of judgments on arbitration, aviation, banking, insurance and reinsurance, private and public international law, oil and gas, sale of goods and shipping disputes.
In announcing Sir Bernard’s membership, Iain Milligan QC, Head of Chambers said: “We are delighted to welcome Sir Bernard back to 20 Essex Street. He brings with him a wealth of experience and will no doubt be a popular choice of arbitrator from the day that he joins us.”
