Top 20 cases to watch in 2020: The Lawyer

Three cases involving members from Twenty Essex are featured in the recently revealed “Top 20 cases of 2020” by The Lawyer. The renowned annual list showcases some of the most significant disputes to watch across the globe.

CIS General Insurance v IBM United Kingdom

An ongoing £130 million High Court dispute relating to an agile software project. CIS is taking on IBM over claims it was behind the failed implementation and operation of a major software insurance platform for the Co-op. Currently in a seven-week hearing in the TCC due to end in March 2020.

Lawrence Akka QC acts for CIS, joined by Alex Charlton QC (4 Pump Court) and Michael Lazarus (3VB) and instructed by Susan Garrett (Addleshaw Goddard).

Tyndaris v  VWM Limited 

The first major UK case to involve machine learning. It is expected to be a landmark case on how AI systems are used in business and how associated risks are managed.

Listed for a four-week trial starting in April 2020, Tony Beswetherick acts for Tyndaris, led by Sonia Tolaney QC (One Essex Court), and instructed by Adam Silver and Ricci Potts of Dechert.

Public Institution for Social Security of Kuwait v Man Group PLC plus 37 other defendants

This large-scale fraud case is brought by a Kuwaiti public institution against its former Director-General and 37 other defendants in the Commercial Court, with the allegations of bribery and corruption spanning three decades. Several defendants have lodged applications challenging the Court’s jurisdiction. As a result, this complex and multi-faceted dispute is expected to run for several years.

Blair Leahy and Belinda McRae, instructed by Fieldfisher, act for one of the defendants, Mr Mohammed El Ghazzi.
